Apple's new iOS 13 update, which will roll out to iPhones this fall, lets you set up Siri to automatically read your your text messages through your AirPods. That means you don't have to pull out your phone to check your messages while you're walking around a city during your morning commute.
And best of all, you can also respond to those same texts–all without ever having to reach for your iPhone or type in some characters. Siri does all the work transcribing for you! Check that your AirPods or Beats support this feature–must have Apple's H1 chip so first-generation AirPods with the W1 chip don't work!
Stop using Siri to read a message
Tap Announce Calls & Notifications. Tap Done. Siri will only read new messages if they arrive when the screen is off and your compatible earbuds are in your ears. After Siri has read a text to you, Siri will start listening for your reply.
If you don't hear Siri announcements Make sure that you're using a compatible device. Make sure that your AirPods or your compatible Beats headphones are paired to your device in Settings > Bluetooth. Go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and make sure that Announce Notifications is turned on.
To have Siri read your text messages automatically, you'll need to be wearing second-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro headphones. To set up the feature, go to your iPhone's Settings, then tap Notifications and toggle on Announce Messages with Siri.

With this feature turned on, Siri announces incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders, and from supported third-party apps. Siri reads your incoming notifications out loud when your headphones are connected to your iPhone or iPad, you're wearing them, and your device is locked.
You can invoke Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer to read almost any text that's on the screen aloud. Enable screen speaking for your mobile device in Settings and then say "Hey Siri, speak screen," or swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers.
With this feature enabled, when one of the enabled apps receives a push notification, the message will be read by Siri through your headphones. In the case of Messages (or other apps that allow for replies), Siri will wait after the message for a response.
